Events Lead, Independent Communications Network (ICN)
Contract: Freelance, part-time (approx. 2 days/week, 10 months)
Fee: £10,000 (self-employed contract)
Location: Remote / hybrid (UK-based)
Reports to: ICN Events Subcommittee & Strategic Lead
Start date: November 2025
About the ICN
The Independent Communications Network (ICN) connects independent media, civil-society organisations, and influencers to build a stronger, more democratic communications ecosystem.
Our events programme brings people together — online and in person — to learn, collaborate, and take action on the big issues shaping public life.
The Role
We’re looking for an organised, creative, and politically aware Events Lead to coordinate a high-impact calendar of events and webinars across the ICN network (January–September 2026).
This role is central to how we build visibility, trust, and participation between independent media, campaigners, and the public.
You’ll plan and deliver flagship gatherings such as the Media Democracy Festival, World News Day, and the Fair Media Gathering, as well as regular webinars and training sessions.
Working alongside a small, passionate team, you’ll help turn these events into the backbone of a more connected and resilient media movement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Planning & Programming
Develop a coordinated events schedule (Jan–Sep 2026) across partner organisations.
Build audience profiles for each event to tailor outreach and accessibility.
Liaise with partner hosts, speakers, and venues to confirm logistics.
Support grant funding and sponsorship efforts by providing clear event plans.
2. Promotion & Communications
Create and implement a promotional timeline for each event.
Coordinate outreach via LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram networks, and ICN / IMA mailing lists.
Draft press releases, website updates, and social media content with Comms Support.
Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all ICN events.
3. Delivery & Data Capture
Manage live and hybrid event delivery, ensuring smooth technical and audience experiences.
Recruit and coordinate volunteers for on-the-day support.
Collect attendee data (email, location, interests) using agreed tools (Google Forms / U-Form).
Capture highlights for post-event newsletters and ICN social channels.
4. Evaluation & Reporting
Produce short post-event reports within two weeks of delivery, including reach, income/expenditure, and learning points.
Feed contact data into the ICN CRM (once launched).
Track performance against KPIs and present updates at weekly subcommittee meetings.
About You
You’ll bring energy, structure, and sensitivity to a fast-moving, values-driven environment.
Essential
Strong organisational and project-management skills.
Experience delivering online and/or in-person events.
Excellent written communication and promotional ability.
Confidence coordinating multiple partners and timelines.
Commitment to democratic media, social justice, and inclusion.
Desirable
Experience in independent media, campaign organising, or civil-society communications.
Familiarity with hybrid events, livestreams, and post-production workflows.
Understanding of grant-funded projects and impact reporting.
Comfortable using collaborative tools (Google Workspace, Slack/Mattermost, Canva, etc.).
Outputs & Deliverables
28 events delivered between January–September 2026.
Average attendance: ≥ 50 participants per event.
Post-event reports: within two weeks of delivery.
Programme budget: break-even or £3,000 surplus for ICN.
Data capture: contribute to ICN/IMA mailing lists and volunteer database.
Contract Details
This is a freelance contract; the contractor will be responsible for their own tax, National Insurance, and pension arrangements.
Hours can be worked flexibly across the week, subject to event schedules and meetings.
